One of the first decisions engaged couples will make is to decide who will stand by their side on the wedding day. Today, there really are no rules for who may be in your wedding party. Brides and Grooms can include a mix of both men and women and may or may not include kids as their flower girl/ring bearers. Over the years, I have worked with couples who have chosen large wedding parties and couples who have opted for smaller wedding parties. There are benefits to both, having a large party can be a lot of fun!
Here are the advantages to a small wedding party, as seen the DC Ladies:
1. You will save money by having a smaller wedding party. During your engagement, wedding party members will help plan and attend your shower, bachelorette party, etc. In return you will (and should) purchase thank-you gifts for each wedding party member. In addition, there is additional per person expenses, such as hair/make-up costs for the wedding. All of this can really add up when you factor in more people.
2. With a small group, you will have an easier time getting ready on your wedding day. The more people you have, the longer the getting ready process takes and the earlier you will have to start.
3. More quality time spent with each person. Of course no matter the size of your wedding party, you will all be hanging out together for pre-wedding events and on the wedding day. But with a more intimate group, you will have more quality time with everyone.
4. Down the road friendships may fade. It happens to many people, but over time people grow a part. If you keep your wedding party small, you will likely choose family or friends; and people who have been in your life for a long time and would still be in your life for years to come.
